A Blog about the Public Schools in our Area:
by Wayne Kemp
IMHO.....they tell me that means: In My Humble Opinion :)...a blog about Schools by Wayne Kemp.
"Dear Wayne, we are considering a move to the Charlotte area...but we have heard the schools are not very good."
"Yes, my company is relocating us to the Lake Norman Area. How are your schools? Our schools here in New York are some of the best in the country."
"We are ready to leave Florida; it is just too crowded...but my children are in excellent schools...and quite frankly, I have read some bad things about the schools in the Huntersville area."
As a Buyer's Agent specializing in Relocation, I've heard a hundred variations of the "Bad/Good Schools" comment. What makes a school "Good" or "Bad"? Well, here in North Carolina, schools are judged by a number. The number is called Performance Composite. The PC score shows the percentage of students performing proficiently at Grade Level. 95.5% of the children at Huntersville Elementary School are performing proficiently at Grade Level. That's pretty good; don't you think?
Would it be great, if 100% were performing at Grade Level? Absolutely! Do you know any public school where every-single-child is performing at or above Grade level; I don't.
Those 5 out of every 100 children are probably not the fault of the school or the system or the teachers. Bringing those 5 students up to Grade Level is (probably) only achievable with more work from the student and the parents; in my opinion. It seems fair to suggest that the home environment has some responsibility for all 100 students to perform at or above Grade Level. Our Elementary Schools range from a high of 95% to a low of 80%. The question is when Blythe Elementary scores an 80%; does that make it a bad school? 80 of every 100 kids are doing great! Another factor to consider is how will the school test next year? The school has trended upward each of the last 3 years. Is it a bad school?
Our Middle Schools in the Lake Norman area have lower scores than elementary Schools. Brawley Middle School in Mooresville has a score of 91.4% and Alexander Middle scored 71.1% last year. Again I ask; "Good" or "Bad"? Is the system failing? Is it the teachers that are failing? Or is it possible that by the time students reach Middle School, motivation, attitude, and home environment have as much to do with success at Grade Level as teachers and school philosophies. And some of the students are now finding the work harder than it was when they attended Elementary School. Haven't you noticed, throughout your life, that when the bar is raised a little, some people just can't quite reach over it?
Our High Schools in Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Davidson, and Denver score from a high at North Lincoln High School of 78.1% to a low of 61.4% at Hopewell High School. High Schools (In my opinion) are the real source of "Bad Schools" labels. Hopewell, North Mecklenburg, and Lake Norman High Schools scored between 61% and 76%. These are all undeniable facts but does it make them "Bad" schools?
No, they are not "Bad Schools." Up until now, has your child been performing at or above Grade Level? Have you been supportive and helpful? Is your child motivated? Do you expect higher achievement from your student? If you answered "Yes", your child will be one of the students performing proficiently at Grade Level...whether it is 1 of 61 or 1 of 76 students.
These High Schools offer Advanced Studies. These High Schools offer classes to prep students for college. One of these schools "Won" the International Baccalaureate competition. One of the High Schools in Mecklenburg County was ranked among the Top 100 High Schools in the Country by Newsweek Magazine. These High Schools have outstanding graduates qualified to go to Harvard, Duke, Northwestern, or any State University. These High Schools also graduate young men and women who fill countless jobs that do not require college degrees.
It is not my intention to be a "Homer" for schools in the Charlotte area. I am a "Homer" for most schools everywhere. So, what is the difference between North Lincoln's 78% and Hopewell's 61%? The difference is not about "Good" & "Bad." At North Lincoln High School, your child will walk the halls and bump into 78 kids that are doing good or better - and at Hopewell your son or daughter will bump into 61 kids doing good or better. It is really that simple.
The only other major factor to consider in school selection is Safety. Safety is a Big Factor. Those statistics are available as well. I can honestly say that none of my clients have ever called me and said these are awful and unsafe schools. None of them have ever called and said, "I'm ready to move; these schools will not do."
Wherever you are now, your schools are probably dealing with the same issues Charlotte faces. Our city is growing and the schools tend to be crowded. However, I believe they are crowded with the children of parents that have moved here for a variety of reasons. Among those reasons are a new start, revitalization, new jobs, and of course temperate weather. Most of them have a "real" interest in seeing their kids grow intellectually. This is truly a melting pot. What a great experience your kids will have! It seems everyone is from somewhere else. Broad based social and cultural exposure from all parts of the country, as well as the world, sit behind every desk of our schools. Our teachers care and our parents care; what more can you ask of an education environment?
You and your child will help make our good schools better. Come on in!
